Giant dog breeds may seem intimidating initially due to their large stature and commanding presence. Still, beneath those massive frames, many of them are affectionate, sensitive, and surprisingly soft-hearted. Often referred to as “big babies,” these gentle giants crave human attention, love to cuddle, and have a playful side that’s hard to resist. Despite their size, they can be as goofy, loving, and emotionally needy as smaller dogs. If you adore dogs that tower over you but act like lap dogs, these giant breeds are perfect.

Great Dane

Known as the “Apollo of Dogs,” the Great Dane is famous for its enormous size and regal appearance, but these gentle giants are far from intimidating regarding their personalities. Despite their imposing height—some standing over 30 inches at the shoulder—Great Danes are affectionate, playful, and love being around people. They’re notorious for thinking they’re lap dogs, often trying to cuddle with their humans despite their massive size. Great Danes are incredibly loyal and form strong bonds with their families, following them around the house like oversized shadows. Their loving and gentle demeanor makes them excellent family dogs, even if they occupy more space on the couch than your average pup.

Newfoundland

Newfoundlands are massive dogs with an even bigger heart. Originally bred as working dogs for fishermen, Newfoundlands are known for their water rescue skills, but their gentle, calm nature makes them big softies at home. Often called “nanny dogs,” Newfoundlands are incredibly patient with children and love being part of a family. Their thick, fluffy coats may make them look imposing, but these dogs are extremely affectionate and thrive on human companionship. They are happiest around their families, often leaning into their owners for attention and affection. Newfoundlands may be large, but they are true gentle giants who just want to be loved.

Saint Bernard

Saint Bernards have a reputation for being heroic mountain rescue dogs, but they’re nothing more than giant cuddle bugs at home. These massive dogs, originally bred in the Swiss Alps to find and rescue travelers lost in the snow, are calm, patient, and incredibly loving. Saint Bernards are gentle with children and other pets despite their large size, often displaying a protective yet affectionate nature. They’re known for their laid-back demeanor, preferring to lounge around with their families rather than engage in high-energy activities. With their big, expressive eyes and calm temperament, Saint Bernards are giant babies who want to curl up with their favorite humans.

Mastiff

Mastiffs are one of the oldest and largest dog breeds, known for their protective instincts and massive size. Despite their imposing appearance, Mastiffs are incredibly gentle and affectionate with their families. These dogs may be excellent guard dogs, but when they’re off duty, they are sweet-natured and love nothing more than lounging around the house. Mastiffs are often described as “gentle giants” because of their calm, relaxed nature. They bond deeply with their families and are known for being exceptionally patient with children. While their size can be overwhelming, Mastiffs are big babies, craving affection and often seeking out their owners for cuddles.

Irish Wolfhound

Irish Wolfhounds are known for their towering height, making them one of the tallest dog breeds in the world. However, these large dogs are known for their gentle and calm nature. Originally bred for hunting wolves in Ireland, Irish Wolfhounds have since transitioned into loving family companions. Despite their hunting background, they are incredibly gentle with children and other pets, often displaying a soft, sensitive side that makes them true big babies. Irish Wolfhounds are known for their sweet and loyal nature, always seeking out their humans for companionship. While they may look intimidating, Irish Wolfhounds are loving and gentle giants who thrive on affection.

Bernese Mountain Dogs form strong bonds with their owners and are known for their loyalty and devotion. They may be large, but they are soft-hearted dogs who want to be close to their humans, making them the perfect giant companion for families.
