It comes down to training environment. I separate pups from each other and work them individually.
Littermate syndrome is the fault of the trainer.

Laughing at this as are my now passed sibling dobermans, sibling retrievers and my current sibling mastiffs, from the same litter.

If you don’t know how to seperate your dogs and have them gain confidence and respect as individuals you probably wouldn’t have done well with one dog either.

I've bought littermate puppies three times. All three turned out GREAT. Never a problem with any of them.

When shopping for a pup, pretend to be daft and ask all the questions that make the breeder think they can take advantage of you. Recruit a friend to pretend they're shopping too and have them meet w the breeder/pups separately from you, and don't tell them you're friends. Have your friend ask similar questions to yours and questions that will show you if they're lying to you or trying ro rip you off. Pretend you're interested in more than one pup and see if they're willing to sell you two. Play dumb, play spy, sniff out the breeders motives/priorities. See if they quote you a higher proce than your friend because they think you're stoooopid or think you can afford it.

I’m fostering and one puppy (female) got adopted at 3months. The same family wants to adopt my other foster pup (her brother) who is now 9months. They were separated for 6 months. Will that still happen? I want to make sure that I do the best for them. The family is great and I know their lifestyle would be good but I’m a little unsure how it’ll go. Any advice is appreciated

I got two puppies from a breeder but I only raised them both for just a few days. I gave my uncle one of them and I kept the other.

I have lived this nightmare. My wife brought home two German shepherds against my wishes, one male one female. I will tell you that those dogs ate my house from the inside out when we were at work. Holes in the drywall, bare concrete showing through the carpet, they would break out of their crate at any cost , you name it. At the one year point, The male died unexpectedly. We're still not sure the exact cause but the female was distraught for a while and then she turned out to be a good dog. We later got another male from the same bloodline and they make a good pair at this point. However, I will note that New mail can be quite destructive when unsupervised.

Question. Maybe it’s the rule usually. But I have 2 brothers from the same parents and have a brother and sister from the same litter. I’ve had no issues training them or developing them into great loving well mannered obedient dogs. So is it just normally a bad idea for the average person and ok for strong pack leaders that are consistent with training or no?

littermate syndrome can either be severe separation anxiety from eachother or the latter. especially when you get two puppies of the same sex they will begin to compete with eachother once they reach their matured age. i had this happen to me, me and my sister both got covid puppies and they were super bonded and ended up almost fighting to the death everyday after they turned 2. it made my sister move out with her dog

Aside from that, it’s 10 times the work. You may think it’s twice the work, but trust me, it isn’t. You better really love dogs, have a lot of patience, and time to train them.

My 1st 2 dogs came from the same breeder and they weee inseparable, never any issues.

Maybe because they were labs and also brother and sister?

It sounds to me like people are getting them too old. It's no problem in a normal family if siblings are close, they still know and listen to their parents. But yeah, if you adopt a pair of siblings out of foster care, who are used to being a unit without steady parents, of course they won't listen to you the same way.

This is something I haven't dealt with. I have gotten two pups at one time before but they were trained and bonded to my kids not one another. They were separate when the kids were together when the family was and socialized with the older dogs that would discipline them as well so they gave no issues. We now use this strategy to rehab and train strays.

Coming from the king of "training is everything" this sounds ridiculous.
Something to be aware of maybe. Something to avoid 100% with this level of absolute certainty.
    No. Im not buyin it.

Well tempered siblings with s9lid 6raining will be just fine.

Im losing faith in this guys wisdom now and second guessing everything hes said now.

@americanstandardk9…..what about to puppies, same mother, one litter apart? That’s the situation I got into with my Huskies. They seem very independent of each other and have very different personalities.

This may be an exception but i had a 1 and done accidental litter bc of my own irresponsibility to get my male and female weims fixed, but one of the puppies had extreme separation anxiety from me and my gf and the other puppies, if you even left the room and she was alone she would scream to the top of her lungs, gave her to a family for free that was already purchasing one of her brothers…they took the 2 pups home and theyve been the best dogs this family says theyve ever owned, seem to be very well behaved and trained, granted this family had 4 kids under 10 and live on 6 acres

I would also note that not only buying from the same litter but buying a puppy when your first dog is only 6-12 months old isn't a good idea either because that first dog is STILL a puppy . Also note some breeds such as the DDR GSD which I have , are not classed as adults until 3 years for a female 3.5 years for a male . My boy is just 3 years old , so these next 6 months are essentially the last of his pup years .
