My first dog is a gsd. Shes 11 now, had her since she was 12 weeks. Dont think Ive done too badly with her. Helps that shes a lower energy gsd though.
Brother in laws first Dalmatian his Coworker trained dogs and guaranteed he could train it. Took Chief to the running track to tire him out, didn't work then he tried chasing him on an umpteen speeidd mountain bike, no luck with that. Finally he took him out and followed him on his Motorcycle and that didn't work and he refunded my B.i.L's money. Best Dalmatian I've ever known. He had a beautiful hound shaped head. Awesome disposition except for his boundless energy. While working on their house After work I would take him to run in the park. I'd be going along like Usain Bolt being chased by a bear and he would just shift up another gear and he was gone. Brother in Law said the reason that fireman kept Dalmatians was you can't have a pet that's smarter than you are.
Golden Retrievers are always the first dog people should own just like the latest Toyota Corolla LE should be the first car people should own!
German shepherds are perfect
A golden retriever has a little more energy than a Labrador ( from my experience) so if your looking for more of a still energetic but can calm down dog , then I recommend labradors , simply because the two I had were easier to train than the one golden retriever- I might be wrong , just speaking from experience!

Many Dalmatians ARE DEAF.
I donβt really understand the concept of first time owner, because if you start with a very small dog because itβs easy, does not make you prepared for a large dog nextβ¦
I got a Great Pyrenees mix as my first and he is super smart, relaxed, easy going. But then I got a German shepherd Labrador and a German shepherd husky mixes and their pistols. The lab mix is a nut and the husky mix is a speedy anxious girlβ¦.
Anyway, luckily I can exercise them a lot living in Colorado. But I think most dogs are high energy given their lifestyle.

No sane trainer would pick Dalmatian for first time owner. And pug and lab being close? Gtfouh.

Dalmatians are amazing companions and super intelligent but they require a LOT of exercise and they can be very manipulative/sneaky so definitely not a great first time dog, so I can see why she wanted to steer away quickly π. Of course with the right guidance and training, any dog can be a great first time dog but some breeds can be overwhelming if you don't know what to expect.
Neither. Both Shepard and dalmations are super high energy and highly intelligent dogs.
