Im planning on adopting a doggo in a few months, and until i can actually bring her home, I'm gonna be visiting her in the shelter as often as possible <3 Im hoping her being already used to me might help her acclimate a bit easier
Good video! Thank you. What do you do when you leave the room? We have another sweet submissive dog., but our dog has been known to pee if she is nervous around another dog. . and making them sleep apart for two weeks is great. But I am not sure if we should leave her in a room with a cosy bed, water and such when we move about the house. I never used a crate before… Want my other dog to move about… but should we leave them along … and if they cry. We have beds toys and yack cheeze bone
We just brought home our second rescue dog (first one we've had 10yrs) and listening to your tips made me realize I have been unusually fortunate with both. Both were fully house broken (no regression), mild temperament though still year-ish "puppies" and really just in need of crate training and basic obedience training, already perfectly friendly with people of all ages, other dogs, and cats (though we have found him to be a "velcro" dog). I can't imagine keeping a new pet separate from existing ones for more than a day much less weeks! We introduced the two on the second day, though they will be living in separate houses for a couple months till my wedding. I can tell my new one had an owner who did some introductory basic training and can't imagine why they dumped him after putting in the effort. After only 3 days I suspect he will be even easier to train than my older one was and am looking forward to going beyond basic Good Citizen work with him.
Just got my teacup chihuahua 2 days ago, she is so sweet and loving. I was over a friends family members house and she had a lot of dogs and the Chihuahua was in the cage literally laying in her own feces that obviously has been in that cage for weeks due to how dried up it was, it was so sad I offered to pay her $50 to take the dog home and she let me, so now I want you to try to figure out how to properly care for her and give her all the love she needs
THANK YOU,,,,,,,… INCREDIBLE…. WONDERFUL… YOU THAT IS..🙂.. i WOSH EACH SHELTER WOULD MAKE A COPY OF YOUR INFOMRATION AND GIVE TO EACH NEW OWNER OR HVE THE LINKS HANDED TO THEM ALONG WITH WHATEVER PAPERS ARE GIVEN TO THEM.. iF THEY DID THIS i BELIEVE THEY WILL HAVE FAR FEWER RETURNS AND NEW OWNERS WOULD BE MUCH HAPPIER DURING THE TRANSITION..THANK YOU AGAIN BEAUTIFUL YOU DESERVE ALL THAT LIFE HAS TO OFFER.. YOUR WISDOM IS APPRECIATED BY EVERYONE..SO TAKE THIS COMMENT AND MULTIPLY BY A GAZILLION BILLION… TRILLION… SOMETHING SPECIAL IS GOING TO HAPPEN FOR YOU IN THIS COMING YEAR.. I CAN FEEL IT… AND IT COMES FROM YOU..CIAO FOR NOW..🙂
Very well done. Just got a puppy mill dog… she holds her urine 24 hours at a time. It’s as though she’s scared to potty in the presence of people. When inside, she tries to sneak away to potty in a room AWAY from us. Any advice?
I just adopted a assie that was born in a pound his mother and sister were adopted out but he was not he is a year and half years old I adoped him but he is really scared and weighs 15 pounds know no commands scared to eat with anyone around runs and hide when you approach him what advice can you give me😢
Wonderful lessons. I'm really terrified about bringing home a new friend to our home with 4 cats and an old Great Pyrenees. We're going to the shelter this afternoon.
I just rescued a dog yesterday evening a tiny yorkie mix breed she is currently 2 months and 3lbs , the shelter did spay her yesterday morning she came home on liquid pain meds . She barely wanted to eat, drink , very shakey , if we walk near her she walks away but if i walk away from her she will follow me or she in the play pen she will whin if she don’t see me standing right by the play pen . She does have a metal crate with the door always open in her play pen . I take her out in the back yard she haven’t learned how to walk on a leash with a harness yet . The first night she laid in my lap to sleep for 4-6 hours
We rescued a dog yesterday. He went into an open crate and won't come out. He hasn't drank or pottied in 2 days! I did get him to take some bacon this morning. How do I make him feel safe in our home?
I rescued a 4 year old female Jack chi mix. Little background info provided. She may have been in mill situation. She is unspayed, looks like maybe bred, no socialization, understands no commands, doesn't understand leash. Pottying has been hit or miss. She's been with us 2 weeks. Very attached to me, very afraid of my husband. Timid, shaking, afraid of everything around her. Food motivated, squirrel triggered. Not sure where to begin. Have been sitting with her quietly for 2 weeks.
I just adopted a homeless Border Collie mix puppy and I’m going through of it! My last best friend of ten years passed away almost two years ago and I think I’m ready! A little nervous but he’s learning that truck rides mean “fun adventures “!
Love, love this video! You talked about all the things I normally tell people to do with their dogs, not just the rescues but, the ones from the breeder as well. They are coming into a new environment with new people is scary. Love, and patience does it. We have to become benevolent leaders for our pups and build a relationship based on trust and respect. You gained a subscriber madame.
I never recommend taking dogs to a dog park. Most dogs are untrained, their owners don't know much about behavior, and a lot of dogs aren't spayed/neutered or vaccinated. So many dogs get attacked at dog parks. If you go to a dog park, go when there is no one around. Luckily I have an old dog park that never has dogs in it near me, they have multiple areas, a nice agility course and some other things. I go there at the end of the day, about 45 minutes before sun down. Instead of going to a dog park, try group training with a positive reinforcement trainer. Or join a dog walking group.
Hi! I am adopting the same breed as your younger dog. Would you tell me which breed is that and if there are specifics that would suit better for them to adapt to the new home? Thank you.
We just rescued at young boxer(estimated 9-12 months) The 1st week has been pretty good, but he didn’t do well with his third crating session. He broke out of the crate, countered surfed, but the funny thing was, he only took his and our snacks and piled them up on the couch and laid there and guarded them. Never even tried to eat any of it. We nicknamed him Duke: Protector of the Snacks. We will go back to basics on the crate, and work on the separation anxiety. I really enjoy your videos! Very informative for a first time rescuer!!!
Hi im about to be a new dog owner, im about to foster a golden retreaver, hes 2 years old (human years) hes obviously moving from one house hold to a new one, hes not from a shelter but the owners want to get rid of him sadly, just scared he'll find it hard to settle in, just looking for some more insight, only because hes not from a shelter spasifically
i recently started working at a shelter and i can’t wait to be able to share your tips and info with adopters because it seems a lot of the time people get the wrong ideas about adoption & expect the dogs to be “happy” right away. the shelter, although we do our best, is a high-stress and scary environment. your advice is priceless and i seriously appreciate your videos! thank you for doing what you do ❤️
Just adopted a Maltese mix that was used in a puppy mill. He has never been taught how to be a dog. He is afraid to walk through doors that are noisy, and does okay on a lease. It's crazy how a dog doesn't know how to be a dog.
As far as white noise goes, my parents dog loves Star Trek, but only TNG. I realized she really liked the Data centric episodes, which made perfect sense given Data's calm tone and lack of strong emotions.
Now when she comes to visit Im sure to put TNG on, and she will actively sit in front of the TV, even if it means coming into a different room to watch. Shes a trekkie. Lol
I am adopting an 8 year female old poodle mix who only lived in a fenced in yard. Never housebroken. She has an anal gland infection with some drainage that the shelter is treating now and they will also spay her. They say I can take her home 3 days after her surgery with a cone on. Do you think that’s okay or should I wait until she’s more healed and let her foster keep her until then? Thanks for this video!
Just got a rescue dog a few weeks ago. Foster mom thinks previous owner kept him on a deck/patio all the time. He doesn't like to go in the yard by himself and jumps on my patio door if I go inside. I work from home and can't always be outside with him. What can I do?
I thought this video and your tips were fantastic! My little one eyed Shih Tzu arrives in London from Saudi Arabi in a few weeks and although I had a beautiful shih tzu for 18 years this will be my first rescue dog. I’ve taken some really good tips and this totally made sense to me Thank you !
I love there was no annoying background music and she doesn’t smack her lips either after every sentence like most youtubers. Thank you for that ma’am!! I learned a lot and her dogs are lucky to have her!!

Please turn on the closed-captioning (CC) for the Deaf. The CC button is not working.

Great video
She seems friendly but don’t trust this person. That Dalmatian didn’t even move!
Thank you! My 3 year old jack chi Coco will be home in 2 days 🥰
Nice video
It's funny watching this video because I had a cat named Cocoa and another cat named Chester

Got a five year old rescue dog yesterday. She is so scared that we can’t even get near her. I feel so bad for her.
This was so helpful! Thanks

What brand of high value food rewards do you like? Thank you .

The dogs in the video look like pedigree collies and not rescue dogs…when this is a video about rescue dogs
