My dog is perfectly able to meet dogs off leash, she does perfectly at off leash dog parks and doggy daycare. But when meeting dogs on leash in the pet store, or vet clinic, or passing on the street, or if she is on leash and a dog meets her off leash, she lunges and threatens them and freaks out and snaps at them. I don't understand this behaviour besides stating that it must be my fault.
Beckman, I want the dog that freaks out. Griffin got a little testy but he definitely wasn't freaking out. My 5 month GSD goes bananas with people and dogs. Not aggressive, just wants to sniff and play. But anytime a person or dog is within 50 feet, he is LASER focused on them and forgets I'm alive. I do all the other things in this video too. Regularly
I think this may be one of my favorite videos you've done. It really highlights how, as a trainer, you need to understand how to problem solve and avoid the whack-a-mole effect. Too much focus on food alone diminishes a trainer's toolbox, our current culture certainly doesn't help. Great stuff.
I’m going to try this with my GSD but with a muzzle. I have tried this and he redirects if discipline is used. But with a muzzle (he is muzzle conditioned) I will be able to communicate better with him 👍
I want to thank you so much for the wonderful tips. After watching a few of your videos I was able to learn a lot, and this video was a HUGE help, first of all, I was able to learn all about leash reactivity and what to do and not to do. Second of all, the gentle leader helped A LOT, because I have tried so many different collars and methods, yet nothing worked and the walks were stressful with him. He is an 11-month-old mix breed dog and he is full of energy and he wants to sniff everything, not to mention the lunging at others, but this video and the gentle leader saved my life and for the first time, in a long time, I had A NORMAL WALK! Thank you so much!
Prayers I can help my rescue. Aggression has been growing lately. Him and his brother were dumped near my house this time last year. He recently bit my husband after a tussle over a toy with his brother. Two beautiful boys, and just little puppies, dumped in the cold of winter. I love him to bits. Worried I can't fix this issue. He's strong as an ox. If I win a lottery I am going to get training with Beckmann for the both of us.
Where I live, we get a LOT of tourists and they bring their dogs. About 90% of the time, they are using a useless retractable leash and have no control of their dogs. To avoid building up to leash reactivity, because I could see my dog starting to do it, I trained him to sit quietly as dogs go by, no matter how they are acting. I don't have to tell him, he does it by himself after about a week of training, no treats required.
This is a dog who wants to engage every dog, but I learned, a long time ago with a past dog of mine, that is not always a good idea. That past dog was attacked and never got his dog aggression out of him. I am now picky about which dogs my current dog will greet, and it's mainly based on how the human handles their dog.
With the gentle leader, mine will often start trying to scratch it off her nose the second she sees or hears another dog. How do I stop that? It scares me that she'll hurt herself. She'll throw a tantrum about it randomly without any corrections happening or her even pulling, throws herself on her back and tries to rip it off
beautifull dog an I enjoyed learning from the video very much. I also noticed this dog is limping!! I didn't catch his age, I guess a young dog so very probably an elbow problem(ellbow dysplasy LPA or LPC) (The problem seems to be the right frontleg, but normally it can be on both sides.
What should I do if the owner of a reactive dogs thinks it's okay. To let his dog be reactive And keep coming at us. I'm trying to calm my dog. But he doesn't care. Great video by the way.
Man this is a carbon copy of my dog ; anyone curious about the race what you're seeing is very likely a Bohemian Shepherd.
As a rule of thumb they're quite intelligent, very adaptable, family-friendly dogs. Drawbacks include skittishness, always wanting to interact with other dogs and humans, and difficulty focusing on you.
I just came here to say you are absolutely full of sh*t. I've been trying all the "tips" and so-called "techniques" in your videos for a couple months now and they have had precisely zero, nadda, zilch, NO effect in correcting behavior. Biting? Yep. Still thinks that is the perfect game. Jumping? Yep. Won't stop no matter what. Recall? Not a frigging chance. I JUST chased her down for nearly an hour – AGAIN – trying to get her to come but she still thinks it is a game. The only thing that ALMOST works is a gentle leader harness for pulling on walks and all it does is stop her from pulling as much. Still won't get her to proper loose-leash walk.
I’ve watched so many of your leash reactivity videos, but this one clicked for me for some reason!
I was letting my dog get way too high on the freak-out scale and became frustrated because I didn’t understand why my corrections weren’t working. Now it makes sense! Thank you 🙏🏼
New neighbor (young adult) has a 1 yr unsocialized intact male maltese (her "baby") who lunges and barks, stands on hind legs jumping backwards as owner retreats. But he's under 10 pounds, so everybody thinks it cute. I brought my stable 2yr spayed female lab and went on a walk. Had the hardest time getting the owner to let the dog walk behind ours then come up and sniff at last. My girl was chill – oh, hi, lets go walk attitude. Neighbor was SO trying to keep dog AWAY from mine, but in under 10 minutes they were mingling, facing and play-bowing…total friends!! and the neighbor was freaked by the play-bow not understanding its a good thing. Neighbor's mom was absorbing it all and ended admitting they did not realize how sad it was to never let him have dog-friends. Well, we have a start!
How often do you consider orthopedic issues when it comes to reactivity and aggression? The dog in the video is gaiting almost every step, which is an indicator of something going on orthopedically, and some pain and discomfort. When you discover issues like these do you recommend a vet visit and pain management before any serious training or does it not matter because the dog should be acting a specific way whether they’re in pain or not?
Let me tell you I used your gentle leader technique for the first time on a 1-year-old female rescue German Shepherd today that redirect frustration nips when she sees other dogs and stays at a level 8 to 10 during entire walks. And that's after ball and tug for an hour before we even leave. It was the first time I've enjoyed and been confident out walking her in daylight. I usually walk her in the middle of nowhere after dark or before sunrise. Was it perfect? No, not as soon as we got around distractions. was it 50% better? yep and it's going to be work, but you are going to help me fix this dog so that she's not stuck in a backyard I can come out with me and my other shepherd who's balanced. For the first time ever this dog can hear me and what I want from her. No other tools have worked, not like this and I've tried them all. I am able to get this dog back in pack drive and out of prey drive. She's a lot of dog, she's rude and like I've heard you say in some of these videos I've watched over the last 24 hours "we can do this all day" All I have to say is thank you thank you thank you thank you!
Gentle leader was the only way i could walk my 80# catahoula leopard hound. Her prey drive was super high. I called her my serial killer. Nothing was safe from her if it came our backyard. Squirrels, birds, racoons, ect. So if she saw a squirrel on the walk she wanted to catch it. She's been gone a year and i miss her everyday.
I don't understand why trainers like Beckman don't use markers before the corrections and rewards. It's Pavlovian and balanced training to use markers.
is it ever ok to allow them to play with these dogs AFTER they are calm and not pulling and jumping? Playing off leash is our lab’s favorite thing in the world but we are working on impulse control first and then gets released to play. Is it mixing messages too much?
Now my 5 month old working line GSD has done pretty good with my slip leash outside. He generally goes right with me. Just getting him to walk beside me is the problem but I think we simply need more practice.
Why do these videos always have herding dogs? They are going to be easier to train to begin with. Lets try a breed that has absolutely no interest in working with a human
Im about to start wprking with a behavioural specialist for my border collie. But yesterday i went out and bought a gentle leader and wow, such a big improvement after just one walk. It was our first ever loose lead walk!!! Thank you so much!
garanteed going down the hill to save joel was more interesting to him than being inturrupted over and over again by joel when he was checking out the fluffy monster. 👍
Our dog lays down and wont move or when the other dog approaches lunges at the dog from her laying down position cant get her to get up She is powerful and cant get her up
Crazy how when I tried redirection treat fails when my puppy started digging like a maniac in my garden. So, after watching another one of Beckman's videos I became my puppy's mama and pulled him off by the scruff of the neck. Now, he sniffs the soil but has not dug since! This trainer is stern but excellent!

Your video makes sense. Thank you!❤. My mini lab freaks out at every dog. She acts like a crazy squirrel on a leash.

Thank you for this video. I appreciate the real life demonstration and how you explained everything you were doing and why you were doing it.

Finally a trainer who addresses the fact that the treats cannot compete with the distractions at all!

I want to try this but my dog is a VERY strong puller 🥹
Yes he s limping..

Great advice!!! Thanks!
It looks a little bit like the dog is limping.
I do NOT agree with letting dogs fight for any reason, with or without a muzzle on. For training or not.

What I struggle with is trying to put these methods into action when the other dogs i encounter on walks continue walking towards us
what if your dog isn't interested in treats when you're on a walk or outside in general?

What do you do, if you have a dog that "LOVES" to look at the other dogs? Like Griffin, but without the agression?

Please help me can I do all this training with my 5 month old golden retriever or he is too small for this??? Please tell me
When snapping on the leash like that. I'm. Worried that I'll hurt my dog.

L/F leg appears to have a problem?

Oh no! My dog would be freaking out the second he saw the dog a mile up the road!
This is the best video I've seen about handling dog reactivity. I assume the same principles apply when they resct to motcycles and bicycles.
I don't understand why trainers like Beckman don't use markers before the corrections and rewards. It's Pavlovian and balanced training to use markers.

He contradicts himself all the time, and is training a limping dog.

Somting else 🤪 isn't this dog limping 🤔?

Everytime I stop in front the door and say sit to my dog he sits and then starts to cry. I don't know what to do…

Loved the insight on the doorway method! It's so important to set boundaries for our dogs. Great tips!

You keep saying that he will "redirect on a human" does that mean the dog may bite a human?
I love the video, give me a lots to think about it, I make some mistakes and I have to correct myself 😅
